Third time’s a charm

When ShAIDS of Grey took to the Theatre Aquarius stage two years ago for its first performance, I had no clue what the future had in store for our production. To be completely honest, I didn’t know if we’d ever perform it again. We had created the show from scratch in a matter of eight weeks, and everyone involved was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Two years later…

We now find ourselves bringing the show back home to Hamilton for its professional debut after a sold out engagement in Toronto. And I must say, I don’t think it’s physically possible for someone to be more excited than I am right now! Seriously, I’m more excited than a 5-year-old boy on Christmas morning. Ok…I still don’t think you’re fully grasping my excitement. I have literally replaced walking with skipping. No joke. That’s the type of excitement I’m talking about.

Why am I so ridiculously excited? Well, this remount is honestly shaping up to be our best production yet. And I’m not just saying that. It’s going to have everything you loved from the first two performances…plus more! Seriously, third time’s a charm. Onstage we’ll be spicing up the show with some exciting new scenes and a bunch of new faces! And online we’ll be giving you an exclusive backstage tour through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and this blog.

So make sure to check back often for weekly updates from the cast and myself! I promise they’ll be très entertaining and that mine will always include a “Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down” section to give you a snapshot of my crazy life.

Thumbs Up

  • ShAIDS of Grey Cast & Creative Team. I don’t think I’ve ever worked with a more talented, more energetic, or more smokin’ hot group of people in my life! Honestly, hanging out with them is always the highlight of my week.
  • RENT Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Although I listen to a lot of different music, I go through cycles. When I find an album or song that I like…I listen to it on repeat until I’m sick of it. Then, I move onto something new, or on a rare occasion, I rediscover an old favourite in my iTunes Library. RENT was this week’s rediscovery, and I’ve probably listened to the songs “Light My Candle” and “Out Tonight” over 30 times in the past three days. Love it!
  • Michael Muller & Create Media. Need a website? These guys are good. Damn good. Want proof? Just check out this sexy website! Not too shabby, eh? And…they’re pretty much the nicest, most patient people you’ll ever work with.
  • Empowerment Squared. Last but definitely not least…two big thumbs way, way up to the organization behind this life-changing production! No matter how daunting the task or impossible the goal, the team at Empowerment Squared is always up for the challenge and will work around the clock to make sure every project is a huge success.

Thumbs Down

  • HIV/AIDS. True, without this disease we wouldn’t have this kick-ass show. But seriously, go to hell pandemic.
  • Costs. Apparently putting on a professional theatre show is ridiculously expensive! Who would’ve known? Okay, so we knew it was going to be expensive. And yes, ShAIDS of Grey is a fundraiser and we hope to raise a lot of money for the cause. But still, there are a number of upfront expenses associated with putting on a production of this magnitude. So if you know of a business that would like to sponsor the show or have a rich uncle that would like to donate…let us know, k?
  • Exams. They just suck. Period. It’s so hard to study Econometrics when all I want to be doing is ShAIDS of Grey work. But don’t worry ECON 3U03, I’m going to own you! And after I do…I’m going to celebrate by devoting my entire Christmas Break to the mountain of ShAIDS work I’ll have waiting for me after this exam. Is it sad that I love this show so much that I’m actually looking forward to it?
  • Christmas Break. No, I’m not Scrooge. And yes, I realize I just said that I’m looking forward to this Christmas Break and all the ShAIDS work that I’ll be able to get done. But at the same time, Christmas Break means no rehearsal. And no rehearsal means…I’m not going to see my ridiculously talented, energetic, and hot cast and creative team for a couple weeks. I’m pretty sure I’m already going through withdrawal and the break hasn’t even started.
